Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a major challenge for the whole world, and Taiwan is no exception. In addition to the cost and considerable effort, this challenge also brings business opportunities for Czech companies.
Taiwan is an advanced economy with a relatively high share of industry in gross domestic product (comparable to the Czech Republic). Due to its focus, it emits a considerable amount of CO2 into the air. In 2017, emissions reached 272 million tonnes, accounting for 0.8% of global emissions. In per capita terms, the figure was almost 12 tonnes of CO2 in 2021, making Taiwan one of the largest emitters in Asia. For comparison: Czech Republic 9.2 tonnes; Germany 8.09 t; USA 14.86 t, PRC 8.05 t, Japan 8.57 t, South Korea 11.89 t (source: Our World in Data).
TARGET — CUT EMISSIONS BY A QUARTER
The Taiwanese government has set a goal of reducing emissions by 23-25% (compared to 2005 levels) by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. He sees this goal as his share of responsibility, but at the same time sees huge business opportunities in it.
For this goal, the local government has committed funds of almost 900 billion Taiwan dollars (about 29.3 billion yuan) by 2030. USD). At the same time, government spending, legislation and regulations issued, and pressure from foreign customers of Taiwanese firms are also expected to fundamentally encourage private investment in “greening” production. Let's not forget that Taiwanese firms are a key part of supply chains in various industries.
FROM INNOVATION TO EXPORT
Some estimates state that private investment will reach a value of up to $180 billion in this period. Taiwanese companies are, in general and in various fields, encouraged to upgrade, to improve their respective industrial technologies. Subsequently, to adopt these innovative technologies and products and put them into practice on a larger scale. The next natural step is to export these adopted technologies or key components abroad and invest abroad.
Environmental protection, including the development of renewable energy sources and the circular economy, is also a priority issue for Czech industry. It deals with energy intensity and related optimization, reclamation of mining areas, disposal and recycling of industrial wastes, and in this context brings new and innovative solutions. Most industries in Taiwan are and will be affected by the “Net Zero” plan.
